Microwave Integrated Retrieval System (MIRS) Patch for S-NPP

Dear Colleagues,

The Community Satellite Processing Package (CSPP) project is releasing a Patch for the NOAA/NESDIS/STAR Microwave Integrated Retrieval System (MIRS) Version 2.0 software for retrieval of atmospheric profile and surface parameters from ATMS on S-NPP.

In response to the CSPP release of Algorithm Development Library (ADL) Block 2.0 SDR software (CSPP SDR Version 3.0), new MIRS bias correction files were created for S-NPP SDR inputs. A patch was designed to update the CSPP MIRS Version 2.0 software.

What is new in CSPP MIRS Patched Version 2.0.2?

    - Command line option --block= added to accommodate new bias correction for CSPP Block 2 (version 3.0) S-NPP ATMS SDRs. The default MIRS execution will now be --block=2.
    - Swath pre-aggregation now uses the --onefile option to the "nagg" utility, which ensures contiguous pass length output files.
    - Environmental variable "F_UFMTENDIAN" is unset to ensure proper reading of MIRS accompanying data files.
    Installing the CSPP MIRS Version 2.0.2 Patch

To install this patch, users can either install the most recent version of the MIRS tarball through the CSPP download site (this version includes the 2.0.2 Patch),


or follow the instructions below to patch an existing Version 2.0 installation.

1). Download the CSPP MIRS Version 2.0.2 Patch (3.2 MB) (for example in ${HOME}):

cd ${HOME}
wget ftp://ftp.ssec.wisc.edu/pub/CSPP/mirs_v ... 0.2.tar.gz

2). Now apply the patch on top of your current MIRS Version 2.0 installation.

tar xf ../CSPP_MIRS_PATCH_V2.0.2.tar.gz

3). Confirm a successfully patched installation by checking for Version number 2.0.2 in the $CSPP_MIRS_HOME/version.txt file.

The MIRS team is planning to release a version of the software that includes NOAA20 ATMS capability by the end of 2018.

The MIRS Team at NOAA is led by Xiwu Zhan and Chris Grassotti at the NESDIS Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR). The Version 2.0 release provides MIRS version 11.1 adapted and tested for operation in a real-time direct broadcast environment.

Supported satellites, sensors, and data include:
* Suomi NPP ATMS SDR (from CSPP or CLASS)
* NOAA 18 and 19 AMSU-A and MHS Level 1B (from AAPP)
* Metop-A and Metop-B AMSU-A and MHS Level 1B (from AAPP)

Official Validated Products created by MIRS include:
* Temperature profile over open water ocean
* Humidity profile over open water ocean
* Humidity profile over non-coastal Land
* Total Precipitable Water (TPW) over open water ocean
* Total Precipitable Water over non-coastal land
* Land surface temperature
* Surface Emissivity over land and snow - Surface Type Classification
* Snow Water Equivalent (SWE)
* Sea Ice Concentration (SIC)
* Snow Cover Extent (SCE), based on the SWE
* Vertically-Integrated Non-precipitating Cloud Liquid Water (CLW) over open water ocean
* Vertically-Integrated Ice Water Path (IWP)
* Vertically-Integrated Rain Water Path (RWP)
* Rainfall Rate (RR) over open water ocean and non-coastal, non-snow-covered land surface types
* Effective grain size of snow (over snow-covered land surface)**
* Multi-Year (MY) Type Sea Ice Concentration**
* First-Year (FY) Type Sea Ice Concentration**
* Snow fall rate (SFR)
**Note that FY and MY Sea Ice Concentration, as well as Snow Grain Size are not officially operational, but preliminary products, which is a higher maturity level than experimental status.

Experimental Products (not fully validated) created by MIRS include:
* Cloud Liquid Water Profile (CLWP) over ocean
* Surface Temperature (skin) extended to snow-covered land surface type
* Surface Temperature (skin) extended to open ocean water
