CSPP Software Release: HEAP NUCAPS Infrared/Microwave Sounder Retrieval Software Version 1.0.2

Dear Colleagues,

The University of Wisconsin-Madison SSEC is making a minor release (Version 1.0.2) of the NOAA/NESDIS/STAR Hyper-Spectral Enterprise Algorithm Package (HEAP) software for retrieving atmospheric profiles of temperature, moisture, trace gases and cloud-cleared radiances from direct broadcast (DB) CrIS+ATMS Sensor Data Records (SDRs) for S-NPP and NOAA-20 and IASI+AMSUA/MHS Level1-b files for Metop-A, B, and C. It is being released as part of the Community Satellite Processing Package (CSPP) in support of the direct broadcast community.

HEAP runs the NUCAPS (NOAA Unique Combined Atmospheric Processing System) algorithm. This CSPP release provides HEAP version 2.1, adapted and tested for operation in a real-time direct broadcast environment. The software contains binary executable files and supporting static data files, as well as input and output files for verification of a successful installation.

HEAP NUCAPS development is led by Walter Wolf and Lihang Zhou at the NOAA NESDIS Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR). This CSPP release was created in close collaboration with Chris Barnet (the NOAA government science lead for NUCAPS from 2003 to 2013) and his staff of developers of the NUCAPS science code, Murty Divakarla and Nadia Smith.

What is new in CSPP HEAP Version 1.0.2?

This minor update includes the following changes:
• Optimized recompilation. Execution time of the retrieval step is approximately halved.
• Added support for Suomi-NPP and NOAA-20 SO2 retrievals. Previous version stored SO2 climatology.

Satellite/Instruments Supported
• NOAA-20 and Suomi-NPP CrIS/ATMS
• Metop-A, -B, -C IASI/AMSUA/MHS

Output Products Include these NetCDF files:
• Cloud-cleared radiances (NUCAPS-CCR-AR_v2r0_*.nc files),
• Outgoing Longwave Radiation (NUCAPS-OLR_v2r0_*.nc files),
• and Environmental Data Record (EDR) vertical profiles of temperature, moisture and trace gasses (NUCAPS-EDR_v2r0_*.nc files) including the following parameters:

• Atmospheric temperature [K] at 100 pressure levels
• Atmospheric moisture [g/g] at 100 pressure levels
• Atmospheric ozone [ppb] at 100 pressure levels
• Atmospheric liquid water [g/g] at 100 pressure levels
• Carbon dioxide dry mixing ratio [ppm] at 100 pressure levels
• Trace gas mixing ratios CO, CH4, HNO3, N2O, SO2* [ppb] at 100 pressure levels
[*Metop-A, B, and C return climatological values for SO2]
• Surface skin temperature [K]
• Microwave surface emissivity
• Column averaged CO2 per AMSU Field-Of-View (FOV) [ppm]
• Cloud top pressure for up to two cloud layers [hPa]
• Cloud top fractional coverage for up to two cloud layers
• 10 Stability parameters including CAPE, Lifted Index (LI) and Convective Inhibition (CIN)
• Quality flags

System Requirements for the CSPP HEAP v1.0.2 Software:
• Intel or AMD CPU with 64-bit instruction support,
• 2 GB RAM,
• CentOS-6, -7, -8 64-bit Linux (or other compatible 64-bit Linux distribution),
• 6 GB of disk space (plus space for your own DB data and CSPP HEAP products),
• Perl v5.010 ; for CentOS-7 make sure perl-core is also installed,
• lftp utility for fetching ancillary data (unless running in quarantine mode).

CSPP HEAP NUCAPS development is led by James Davies at the Space Science and Engineering Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison with funding support from the NOAA/NASA Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS).

How to Install the CSPP HEAP Version 1.0.2 Package

Users can acquire the software by either doing a full installation, or by applying a patch to their current Version 1.0 installation. Instructions for new installations can be found at the CSPP website:

https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/cspp/heap_v1.0.2.shtml

The installation document is available here: https://bin.ssec.wisc.edu/pub/CSPP/docs ... v1.0.2.pdf

To apply the CSPP HEAP Version 1.0.2 Patch to your current CSPP HEAP Version 1.0 installation, follow these steps:

1). Download the patch tarfile (800 Kilobytes). In this example, our CSPP HEAP Version 1.0 installation is in $HOME.

cd $HOME
wget https://bin.ssec.wisc.edu/pub/CSPP/heap ... 0.2.tar.gz

2). Apply the patch over your existing installation

cd CSPP_HEAP_1_0
tar xf ../CSPP_HEAP_PATCH_V1.0.2.tar.gz

3). Confirm a successful patch.

cat version.txt
