CSPP ACSPO Imager SST Versioin 2.0 Release

ACSPO SST EDR software supporting VIIRS, AVHRR and MODIS imagers V2.0

Dear Colleagues,

The University of Wisconsin-Madison SSEC is pleased to announce the release of Version 2.0 of the Community Satellite Processing Package (CSPP) NOAA/STAR Advanced Clear-Sky Processor for Oceans (ACSPO) software for retrieving Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) from direct broadcast (DB) AVHRR, MODIS and VIIRS sensor data records (SDRs).

ACSPO development is led by Alexander Ignatov of the NOAA/NESDIS Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR). This CSPP release was created in close collaboration with Yury Kihai at STAR. This CSPP release (CSPP_ACSPO v2.0) is an implementation of NOAA ACSPO version 2.80 for AVHRR, MODIS and VIIRS, adapted and tested for operation in a real-time direct broadcast environment. The software contains binary executable files and supporting static data files.

What is new in CSPP_ACSPO v2.0?
  • * The algorithm versions have been updated for all sensors (VIIRS, AVHRR, MODIS) to ACSPO v2.80, packaged and delivered as CSPP_ACSPO V2.0.
    * Added support for Metop-C AVHRR.
    * NOAA missions with AVHRR aboard (NOAA-15,16,17,18,19) are no longer supported (see Note below).
    * Implementation and deployment is now done through a Singularity container; a recent version of Singularity is now a system requirement.
    * The wrapper language used by the CSPP team has changed from Perl to R.
    * Command line options and syntax have changed.
Supported satellites, sensors, and data are:
  • * NOAA-20 and Suomi-NPP VIIRS SDR (from CSPP or NOAA CLASS),
    * Metop-A,B,C AVHRR (from AAPP v8 or NOAA CLASS),
    * MODIS Aqua and Terra L1B (from SeaDAS OceanColor Science Software (OCSSW) or NASA LANCE/LAADS)

System requirements for the CSPP ACSPO v2.0 software are as follows:

  • * Singularity version 3.7.3 or above (
    * Intel or AMD CPU with 64-bit instruction support.
    * 8 GB RAM.
    * CentOS-7 64-bit Linux (or other compatible 64-bit Linux distribution).
    * 2.5 GB of disk space (plus space for your own DB data and CSPP_ACSPO products).
CSPP ACSPO V2.0 Output Products
The output of CSPP ACSPO V2.0 is two NetCDF4 files; a legacy file format and a file that follows conventions specified by the Group for High Resolution Sea Surface Temperature (GHRSST).

Bias Files
The SST bias files accumulated to date using previous versions of CSPP_ACSPO can be used with CSPP_ACSPO v2.0. Starting CSPP_ACSPO v2.0 from a different moment in time, or starting without any bias files, is also acceptable. The integration time for their accumulation is 12 hours of satellite data, but in reality they stabilize much faster, after approximately 2 hours.

Please Note:
Support for NOAA AVHRR GAC is absent from this release. The algorithm developer advised that there are three functional NOAA AVHRRs currently in
orbit, onboard NOAA-15,18 and 19. The NOAA-18 and 19 orbits have substantially degraded in recent years, making their thermal IR calibration, and derived SSTs unstable and sub-optimal. NOAA-15 has been always flying in a terminator orbit, which is extremely unfavorable for thermal IR calibration, making it unstable and inaccurate.
