CSPP Geo GRB 1.0.15 Patch for GLM and EXIS EUV Products

Post by jbraun »

Dear Colleagues,

The DO.07 software update to the GOES-R ground system is planned Tuesday, October 9, at approximately 11AM EDT. This update will result in format and content changes to the GLM and EXIS EUV products in the GOES-16 and GOES-17 GRB data streams.

The CSPP Geo team has developed a patch to the GRB software package that will allow continued generation of those products at GRB receiving stations after DO.07 goes live. This patch is backward-compatible with the current data stream, so it can be applied before the transition without affecting product generation. Note that CSPP Geo users who do not use GLM and EXIS EUV products will not need to apply the patch at all, as generation of products from other instruments will not be affected.

The patch has been developed according to the technical specifications in a draft version of the GOES-R Series Product Definition and Users' Guide (PUG), and has been tested on sample data from the ground system. The software will be tested on live GRB data during and after the transition, and if any issues are found, a new patch will be released to users as soon as possible. We have been informed that a new version of the PUG describing the product changes in DO.07 is expected to be released soon.

The patch should be applied to GRB version 1.0.14, and will update the version number to 1.0.15. Note that there is no need to shut the ingestor down; the patch can be applied while the ingestor is running.

The patch can be obtained from the software download page on the CSPP Geo website (login required). For instructions on applying the patch, refer to the CSPP Geo GRB Software Users' Guide v1.0.15, also available on the download page.

We have been informed that OSPO will send an ESPC notification as soon as the change goes live in the ground system. We will post updated information as it becomes available to this forum thread, including the status of the ground system change, and any known issues.

Please contact csppgeo.issues@ssec.wisc.edu with any questions, or to report any issues encountered when applying the patch or running the software.

We received this notification from ESPC Operations indicating that the DO.07 update to the ground system has been delayed due to Critical Weather Day.

----------------------------------------

Update #1: This software release will be installed after the Critical Weather Day declaration is lifted.

Topic: GOES-16 and GOES-17 Software Update DO.07
Date/Time Issued: October 3, 2018 1725 UTC
Product(s) or Data Impacted: GOES-16 and GOES-17 GRB and netCDF products
Date/Time of Initial Impact: October 9, 2018 1500 UTC
Date/Time of Expected End: N/A

As of October 15, 2018, around 1627UTC, the UW-Madison GRB receiving station started generating products consistent with the DO.07 upgrade to the ground system.

Users who are running GRB v1.0.15 should be generating all products as usual.

Based on our testing, users who are still running GRB v1.0.14 should expect invalid values in some variables in the GLM and EXIS EUV products. All other products should be unaffected.
