Description: On Wednesday December 10, 2014 the VIIRS instrument will transition to a new flight software version (Ver. x4016). The flight software update is not expected to impact VIIRS data; however, the transition to the new update will cause periodic outages and will cause degradation of the Day-Night Band until corresponding tables are loaded. Below is a list of expected impacts:
VIIRS Data may be missing or corrupt during the following VIIRS flight software transition commanding windows:
SVL 16162: 13:08:48 - 13:22:59 UTC
SVL 16163: 14:50:48 - 15:04:23 UTC
SVL 16164: 16:34:09 - 16:46:16 UTC
SVL 16165: 18:17:38 - 18:28:17 UTC
SVL 16166: 20:00:25 - 20:11:33 UTC
SVL 16167: 21:42:27 - 21:55:23 UTC
VIIRS Data Impacts:
VIIRS will be commanded to OP_Day mode for multiple orbits as a necessary step to minimize data impacts. Between 15:00 - 18:25 UTC, the VIIRS instrument will be placed in OP_Day mode and will be not executing day-to-night transitions. During that time, the visible bands will appear "degraded" during the nominal OP_N portion of the orbits as this data is not produced at that time.
In addition, the VIIRS Day-Night Band will be degraded due to the flight software transition starting at approximately 16:37 UTC. The degradation is expected to end by 20:11 UTC when all required DNB tables have been loaded and activated. VIIRS will return to full nominal operations after 21:55 UTC.
