SNPP CrIS Instrument Anomaly

Post by kathys »

JPSS S-NPP CrIS Long Wave Signal Processor Failure: Issued: August 14, 2023 0106Z

Date/Time Issued: August 14, 2023 0106 UTC

Product(s) or Data Impacted: JPSS NPP CrIS Long Wave Infrared (LWIR) Data

Date/Time of Initial Impact: August 13, 2023 21:32 UTC

Date/Time of expected end Time: TBD

Length of Outage: Ongoing

Details/Specifics of Change: JPSS S-NPP CrIS (Cross Track Infrared Sounder) experienced a Long Wave Signal Processor Failure on August 13, 2023 at approximately 21:32 UTC.

Engineering is investigating the cause of the CrIS LWIR failure. The overall health and safety of S-NPP Spacecraft Bus and the remaining instruments on board are nominal.

The remaining instruments are generating science data and the data is being transmitted successfully via stored mission data (SMD) transmissions from S-NPP

Update #2, Issued on 28 August 2023, 18:07 UTC: S-NPP CrIS instrument is planning recovery from the main processing unit of Side-1 electronics to Side-2 electronics starting on August 29, 2023 at ~13:11 UTC (Rev#61335) to recover Mid Wavelength IR band information. These activities are planned to be completed by August 30, 2023 at ~16:50 UTC (Rev#61351). This work is considered a break/fix recovery action.

Post transition, science data from the S-NPP CrIS instrument will undergo a brief Cal/Val checkout to ensure it is meeting all operational requirements. NDE/PDA subscriptions for S-NPP CrIS RDR products will be disabled on August 29 at ~13:00 UTC.

S-NPP CrIS data will remain available for Direct Broadcast users, but users are advised that science data will be under evaluation. An update will be made to this notice once CrIS science data is approved for operational use.

Update #3, Issued on 30 August 2023, 21:52 UTC:

S-NPP CrIS instrument recovery activities are on-going as engineering continues to troubleshoot with vendor support. These activities are expected to continue through the week of September 3, 2023. An update will be made to this notice when further status is available.

Update #4, Issued on 31 August 2023, 20:05 UTC:

The S-NPP CrIS instrument successfully switched to side-2 electronics on August 31, 2023 at ~16:05 UTC (Rev#61365) with the Mid-Wave and Short-Wave bands confirmed to be operational. There are activities remaining to be executed on the instrument before the science data that is now being generated can be ready for Cal/Val analysis in order to declare the data ready for operational use.

While science data is now available via Direct Broadcast, users are recommended to not use this data until an update to this notice declares S-NPP CrIS science data ready for operational use.

Update #5, Issued on 6 September, 21:39 UTC:

As of Wednesday September 6, 2023, all S-NPP CrIS instrument recovery commanding activities have been completed. The CrIS instrument is showing nominal recovery, but Cal/Val teams will still need to conduct more analysis before all CrIS science products can be approved for operational use. This science data will be available through GRAVITE, NCCF, CLASS and NDE I&T through which the Cal/Val teams and PALs can perform their full analysis.

While science data is now available via Direct Broadcast, users are recommended to not use this data until an update to this notice declares S-NPP CrIS science data ready for operational use.

Update #6, Issued on 8 September, 15:55 UTC:

As of Friday September 8, 2023, all CrIS SDR and BUFR products are approved for operational use and NDE/PDA subscriptions for those products were enabled at 15:30 UTC, September 8, 2023. Direct Broadcast (DB) users can use the equivalent CSPP LEO products for operations.

As a reminder, the Long Wave band data will no longer be available from the S-NPP CrIS instrument.

This completes the S-NPP CrIS side-1 to side-2 swap anomaly recovery.
