GeoDB OISST data

Post by ThorpeAJ »

Hello,

I was wondering if there were convenient ways to retrieve older ancillary data from the geodb website (https://geodb.ssec.wisc.edu/ancillary/) for processing. Are there good substitutes for files like the snow maps, or oisst data on NOAA PSL or CLASS? Or does the software conform to an internal data format?

Thanks,

Hello,

The short answer then is that there is no convenient way to get older ancillary data from from geodb website.

Some of the GEOCAT ancillary datasets are standard, and some are unique to the product. For example, the snow_map product is one that was created from other ancillary specifically in support of this software. However, other dynamic ancillary, such as the oisst files, are distributed through NOAA:

You will notice though, that GEOCAT requires binary OISST files, and not NetCDF. We convert these files to binary.

We do archive the ancillary data ourselves, and are trying to find a way to make that available online, but have not been successful yet as our targeted user is someone processing the data in near-real-time. However, if you have a limited number of non-recent days that you are interested in (<10), we could re-stage that data for you at the website. It would be scrubbed in a few days time.
