SNPP VIIRS Anomaly

Post by kathys »

Date/Time of Initial Impact: April 24, 2024 1829Z: During Rev 64729 (AOS 18:29:46z), operations received multiple VIIRS YH alarms indicating S-NPP VIIRS experienced an anomaly and the instrument entered an anomalous state (single board computer lockup suspected). Engineering has started recovery steps and was able to restore the instrument into an operational state in op-day mode by 21:54z. Engineering will resume the remaining recovery steps on Thursday, April 25, 2024.

All missed S-NPP VIIRS data will not be recoverable. All VIIRS science data except day night products are valid for operational use. A future update will provide the status on when the day night bands are ready for operational use. The NOAA-21 and NOAA-20 VIIRS instruments will continue to provide all other JPSS VIIRS data needs.

All S-NPP VIIRS science and CrIS BUFR products are impacted by the ongoing issue.
