VIIRS SDR reprojection software (Polar2grid) V1.2 Release

Post by kathys »

CSPP VIIRS SDR reprojection software V1.2 for GeoTIFFs and AWIPS NetCDF files

We are pleased to announce a new release (version 1.2) of the Community Satellite Processing Package (CSPP) Polar2grid software for reformatting VIIRS SDR data into reprojected GeoTIFF files and/or Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) NetCDF 3 gridded files. AWIPS is the visualization and analysis tool used operationally by the US National Weather Service (NWS).

What is new in Version 1.2 release?
- VIIRS 24 bit True Color GeoTIFF creation is now a one step process, with the Corrected REFLectances (CREFLs) created as part of the crefl2gtiff.sh execution.
- A bug was corrected in the CREFL software that fixes values for missing and saturated observations. The effect of this bug on the output product true color images is described in a CSPP Polar2Grid Forum topic: http://forums.ssec.wisc.edu/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=366 .
- VIIRS reprojections can now use either non-terrain corrected (GIMGO, GMODO) or terrain corrected geolocation files (GITCO, GMTCO) as inputs.
- AWIPS NetCDF files are now created using a spherical earth versus an ellipsoid earth transformation. This has improved the MODIS and VIIRS AWIPS product registrations.
- Proj4 grid entries used by the polar2grid software now use latitude/longitude degrees as reference coordinates instead of radians. If you are using grids previously defined by the grid_helper.sh script, you will have to define the grids again.

CSPP Polar2grid Software Features
- Accepts VIIRS CSPP or IDPS Sensor Data Record (SDR) HDF5 files as input.
- Creates standardized output GeoTIFF files. Image default projection is the WGS 84/Platte Carrée coordinate system.
- Execution takes place using simple bash scripts; users specify a directory containing the SDR files, or the files themselves.
- Software uses I-Bands to sharpen the M-Bands for high resolution true color image file generation.
- ms2gt software (http://nsidc.org/data/modis/ms2gt/) modules are used for the reprojections.
- Accepts proj4 grid definition parameters.

The software accepts VIIRS CSPP or IDPS Sensor Data Record (SDR) HDF5 files as input, and transforms the requested I-Bands, M-Bands or Day/Night band data into high resolution reprojected Geographic Tagged Image File Format (GeoTIFF) files, or a select number of SDR Bands into gridded NetCDF files for display in AWIPS. A number of projections and grids can be chosen. Local grids can be defined. This open source software was developed by a team at the University of Wisconsin, led by David Hoese.

This software package is supported on 64 bit Intel Linux platforms. Source code, binaries, execution scripts and documentation are included at the CSPP website:
