CSPP Geo GRB instructions and support plans for GOES-18

Post by tommyj »

As of the date of this forum post, the current released version of the CSPP Geo GRB software package is 1.0.26.

Support for GOES-18 as operational GOES-West

GOES-18 is currently scheduled to become the operational GOES-West satellite in January 2023. GRB v1.0.26 will require a configuration change and a restart to process data received from GOES-18. However, an update to the CSPP Geo GRB package is planned for 3rd Quarter 2022, which will allow live switching between any spacecraft in the GOES-R series (GOES-16, GOES-17, GOES-18, and GOES-19), with no configuration change or restart. It is recommended that users install the update before GOES-18 becomes operational as GOES-West.

For users who wish to continue to use v1.0.26 rather than installing the update, the configuration file grb-ingestor.conf should be edited, and the line with the XML configuration file should be changed to GOES-18.xml. For example:

wrapper.java.additional.3=-Dconfig=GOES-18.xml

The ingestor should then be restarted. This change should be made in sync with the GOES-West changeover.

Interleaving

Before GOES-18 becomes operational, it will be utilized to alleviate the cooling problem on GOES-17 which has affected ABI infrared detectors at night during certain parts of the year, resulting in degraded imagery. See this link for more information on the GOES-17 cooling issue.

NOAA has tested a process to substitute GOES-18 ABI data during the periods of degraded data, by interleaving these data into the live GOES-17 GRB data stream. This interleaving is planned to be utilized starting August 1, 2022. For users currently running CSPP Geo GRB v1.0.26 to process GOES-West, the interleaving will be handled seamlessly, with no changes needed. Please note that interleaved ABI products will be labeled with the correct origin spacecraft, GOES-18 (for example "G18" in filenames). GOES-18 has already been moved near the GOES-West position, adjacent to GOES-17.
