SNPP Satellite Anomaly

Post by kathys »

All SNPP instruments are currently in safe mode. There are no science observations currently included in the SNPP direct broadcast.

From NOAA:

Update #1: After further investigation, the SNPP spacecraft entered a non-nominal state at ~02:03:22 UTC on Jul 26, 2023. S-NPP is in Mission Point mode and all instruments are currently in a safe mode state. Engineering will continue to restore all instruments and science data. Although the HRD transmitter remains on, Direct Broadcast (DB) users are advised that science data is not available.

All missed data will not be recoverable. No data is available starting at 01:56:11 UTC, July 26, 2023 (Rev #60846).
The NOAA-20 spacecraft (the primary satellite) will continue to provide all the primary JPSS science data needs.

Update #2, Issued 27 July, 00:26 UTC: Engineering commenced instrument science data activation activities today and will continue through the next few days. The S-NPP spacecraft remains power positive and all communications elements are functional.

ATMS was placed in operational mode at 20:14:13 UTC. CERES was placed in operational mode at ~20:30 UTC. OMPS was placed in operational mode at 23:15 UTC. VIIRS and CrIS will be activated over the next two days. Cal/Val teams are focusing their analysis on observed data following this timeline.

Full product recovery is expected to require approximately 1 week. This science data will be available through GRAVITE, NCCF, CLASS and NDE I&T through which the Cal/Val teams and PALs can perform their full analysis. Although the HRD transmitter remains on, Direct Broadcast (DB) users are advised that science data is not available.

Update #3, Issued July 27, 15:47 UTC: As of Thursday, July 27, 2023, the ATMS SDR, TDR, and Microwave Integrated Retrieval System (MiRS) EDR products are approved for operational use and NDE/PDA subscriptions for those products will be enabled at 15:30 UTC, July 27, 2023. Direct Broadcast (DB) users can use the equivalent Community Satellite Processing Package (CSPP) LEO products for operations.

Update #4 Issued July 27, 22:10 UTC: Engineering continued instrument science data activation activities for S-NPP.

As of Thursday, July 27, 2023, VIIRS was placed in full operational mode at ~16:50 UTC. CrIS was placed in full operational mode at ~19:36 UTC. Cal/Val teams are focusing their analysis on observed data following this timeline. This science data will be available through GRAVITE, NCCF, CLASS and NDE I&T through which the Cal/Val teams and PALs can perform their full analysis.

S-NPP Tropical Cyclone Products (NTCP) and Blended hydro have been approved for operational use and NDE/PDA subscriptions for those products were enabled at 15:30 UTC.

Full product recovery is expected to require approximately 1 week. S-NPP VIIRS, CrIS, OMPS product subscriptions on PDA OPS will be enabled as each product is cleared for operations by the Cal/Val teams and Product Area Leads (PAL) and approved by OSPO’s Satellite Products and Services Division (SPSD). OSPO will issue an ESPC Notification prior to distributing the product on PDA OPS. At that point CSPP LEO users can use the equivalent CSPP product for operations.

Update #5 Issued July 28, 15:54 UTC : Engineering continued instrument science data activation activities for S-NPP. As of Friday, July 28, 2023, VIIRS SDR products are approved for operational use. Direct Broadcast (DB) users can use the equivalent Community Satellite Processing Package (CSPP) LEO products for operations. However, Cal/Val teams are continuing their analysis on VIIRS EDR products.

The NOAA OMPS SDR and EDR teams will evaluate OMPS Limb Profile (LP), Nadir Profile (NP), and Nadir Mapper (NM) product quality after the OMPS SDR Look Up Tables (LUTs) are ingested into operations mid next week.

The CrIS instrument is showing nominal recovery, but Cal/Val teams will still need to conduct more analysis before all CrIS science products can be approved for operational use.

Update #6 Issued July 31, 17:06 UTC: As of Monday, July 31, 2023, all CrIS SDR and BUFR products are approved for operational use. All VIIRS EDR products are now approved for operational use. Direct Broadcast (DB) users can use the equivalent CSPP LEO products for operations.

The OMPS SDR and EDR teams will evaluate OMPS Limb Profile (LP), Nadir Profile (NP), and Nadir Mapper (NM) product quality after the OMPS SDR Look Up Tables (LUTs) are ingested into operations later this week.
